PicoSure Focus – The Lunchtime Laser

It is amazing that another beautiful summer has come and gone. While I love the laid-back vibe that summer brings, I don’t love the telltale signs of aging it leaves behind. Once the summer sun’s glow fades, what remains on our skin is only the damage it created, characterized by dark spots, rough patches and wrinkles.

While we at La Chelé are proud to offer several ways to effectively treat these concerns, we have one laser treatment that will do it quickly, gently, and with little to NO downtime: the PicoSure Focus. The PicoSure is the only laser of its kind in the world, operating in picoseconds, allowing for a much faster treatment time. This speed, combined with minimal ablation of your top layer of skin, make the Focus the ultimate “Lunchtime Laser”. The PicoSure lightens dark spots like freckles and melasma, as well as tightens pores and restores elasticity in one quick and painless treatment. Afterwards, you may be a little pink, but you can immediately return to work or hit the soccer field (with a little sunblock, of course). While one Focus will yield noticeable results, I recommend at least three PicoSures to see the full effect of the treatment.

I invite you to take advantage of our Combination Treatment Fall ‘PicoGlow’ Special so that you can see for yourself how quick and easy it is to slough off the vestiges of summer sun and prepare for a new season of youthful beauty.

I am looking forward to seeing you all, and trading stories of summer vacations, the new school year, and all of the other great things you beauties have going on!

Love,

Lisa

One man’s experience with Botox and Fillers from a la chelé patient.

PopsugarFeature

Growing up, my go-to movie quote was, “Wrinkled, wrinkled little star. Hope they never see the scars.” That’s a line Meryl Streep’s insanely vain character Madeline says as she looks despairingly into the mirror at her aging face. It’s from the movie Death Becomes Her, a dark ’90s comedy that tapped into how society’s obsession with looking youthful can control our lives.

I’ve sarcastically repeated that phrase to myself over the years while spending countless hours staring at my own cracking face in the mirror. So you get it. I’m one of those people who is obsessed with looking younger. If MySpace was still a popular thing, my dermatologist, Dr. Lisa Espinoza, would, without a doubt, be in my top eight. For goodness’ sake, I had my first IPL laser treatment at 19 freaking years old to remove a slight redness from my chin. Read More….

No-Knife Neck Treatments

Although most of our attention and energy go into taking good care of the skin on our face, the neck is an area of great concern for many.  Crepiness, horizontal necklace lines, prominent platysmal bands, fat accumulation and the dreaded turkey neck are all complaints we hear on a daily basis. So what is the best solution? While there may not be any treatment as effective as surgery, improving and maintaining a youthful neck is possible with the right treatments and products. Here are our expert tips on how to slow down the aging process and optimize the appearance of your neck.

 The Right Products

The neck is often overlooked butshould not be neglected as part of your skincare regime. Because the neck ages differently than the face, moisturizers we use on our faces may not provide optimal benefits or anti-aging results for the neck. Noteworthy: the skin in this area is more sensitive than on the face so you should be conscious of the strength of your products.

Treatments

Our world of non-invasive treatments offers several options to treat the common complaints of an aging neck including injectables and lasers.

Botox

If you are plagued with prominent platysma bands, Botox injections may offer a solution for you. Botox works by relaxing the hyperactive platysma bands that are formed by having a more active platysma muscle. It’s important to note that Botox is not intended to treat horizontal neck lines that are primarily attributed to a decline in skin elasticity and loss of volume

Fillers

The use of dermal fillers, such as Restylane® Silk, may also provide mild improvements in fine lines and wrinkles in the neck.

Ultherapy®

Our long-standing best lifter is Ultherapy®,  a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure for the face, neck and décolletage that uses ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin. Results from Ultherapy® will appear gradually over the course three to six months following your treatment. While this technology does not duplicate the results of surgery, Ultherapy® has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready to go under the knife.

Infini®

Infini® has shown to be very effective in targeting both texture and tightness. The combination of 49 microneedles, which penetrate at depths of up to 3.5mm, and high intensity focused radiofrequency packs a serious punch to improve the appearance of fine lines and re-chisel a sagging jawline. The best part? Radiofrequency and microneedling are both “colorblind” which means that treatments can be performed regardless of skin type, tan or time of the year.  A series of two to three treatments spaced about one month apart are typically recommended for optimal results and patients can expect a few days of downtime.

Playing it Safe…SPF made simple!

LaC_Summer2015_Hello2

Any skincare expert, physician or esthetician alike, will tell you that the most important topical (yes, even more important than your TNS Essential Serum!) is SUNSCREEN! It is the only product in our skincare regimen that is an absolute constant: it is imperative that you wear an SPF protectant 365 days of the year. Regardless of whether you’re spending the day on the beach in July or on the ski slopes in January, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays should be a top priority. But unfortunately it’s not enough to slap any old sunscreen on your face and body; the quality of the sun care products you use is critical.

SUNSCREEN BUZZ WORDS…

“BROAD SPECTRUM:”

The term “Broad Spectrum” means that the product offers protection from both UVA and UVB Rays. Why do you need to protect yourself from both types of rays? To make things simple, UVA rays are what we refer to as “aging” rays and UVB rays are primarily what causes sunburn.

“WATER RESISTANT” VS “VERY WATER RESISTANT:”

Common sense should tell us that both sweat and water can wash sunscreen off of our skin so thankfully the FDA no longer allows any company to tout their sunscreen as being waterproof. However, water resistance is an important feature of your SPF product to understand. “Water resistant,” as defined by the FDA, means that the product will stay effective for up to 40 minutes in the water whereas “very water resistant” offers up to 80 minutes of protection. The take-home point: you will need to reapply after 40 or 80 minutes respectively. While we’re on the topic of reapplying, it should be common practice that you reapply after toweling off and even doing so every 2 hours regardless of exposure to water.

“PHYSICAL” VS “CHEMICAL”

Knowing the difference between the terms “physical” and “chemical” is an important part of understanding how sunscreen works. Physical sunscreens, commonly referred to as sunblock, contain minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide. These minerals work to protect your skin by deflecting the sun’s rays. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the sun’s rays. Two of the most common chemical agents in sunscreens are oxybenzone or avobenzene. A physical sunscreen is preferred.

A FEW OF OUR SUGGESTIONS…

Multitask!

New-aged sunblocks, such as Elta MD, are so specialized that cater to your skin’s needs! There are special formulas designed for those who are prone to breakouts, Rosacea and hyperpigmentation. Dr. Espinoza’s personal favorite in summer months to hide hyperpigmentation is Even Up by ColoreScience, which boasts an SPF of 50 and offers great coverage if worn alone as a makeup.

Brush it on!

The new recommendation for applying sunscreen is to use a lotion in the morning and reapply every two hours with a powder. ColoreScience, an award-winning brand of sun care products, created a self-dispensing micronized powder sunscreen that makes reapplying throughout the day quick and easy.

PRP: a natural way to rejuvenate your skin.

We know that in order to combat the signs of aging and improve the health and appearance of our skin nonsurgically, we need to utilize a combination of different techniques. At La Chele, we advocate a multiple-modality treatment plan that includes facial treatments, lasers and injectables along with the right topicals and it’s pretty incredible what we can accomplish over time. But what if I told you that we now have a way to amplify these treatments and use your own body’s ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production, minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall skin tone and texture?

We strive to offer the most cutting-edge, customized procedures to help you revitalize your skin and PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, is the latest addition to our family of outstanding medical facial treatments.

What is PRP?

When we use the term “platelet rich plasma,” we are referring to a high concentration of platelets and tissue building elements that are contained within your own blood’s plasma. By releasing at least eight essential growth factors, this plasma aids in cell growth, angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels), collagen and elastin production and repair of damaged tissues. The treatment involves drawing a small volume of your blood (no more than what is usually required for a basic lab test) that is placed in a centrifuge, a device that spins the blood at a rapid rate. By doing so, the plasma is optimally concentrated and is not contaminated by red and white blood cells that can blunt the powerful effects of the platelets. This plasma can then be applied topically to the skin in conjunction with microneedling, Infini and IPL or even injected along with filler. We are also excited to introduce PRP for hair restoration!

Key Benefits of PRP

  • Stimulation of proteins that increase collagen production
  • Improved appearance of fine lines & wrinkles
  • Skin Tightening and volumization
  • Remarkable enhancement of skin texture, tone and other skin surface imperfections
  • Minimization of scarring and stretch marks
  • Angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)
  • Pore Reduction

Coupling PRP therapy with both regular microneedling and Infini (microneedling with radiofrequency) is a highly effective way to ensure that these growth factors are being delivered to the optimal area of the skin. By creating microscopic channels with microneedles, the plasma is able to penetrate into the dermis and stimulate even more collagen remodeling than with microneedling alone.

Platelet activation has also been shown to accelerate the wound healing process; therefore, by applying PRP after an IPL Photofacial, we can reduce the downtime associated with our most popular laser treatment.

A huge area of concern for many people, men and women alike, is hair thinning and hair loss and now, with the use of PRP injections, we are able to restore your hair without the use of implants or surgery. Because PRP increases the blood supply, dormant roots in the scalp are activated after injections. The stem cells of the hair follicles are stimulated, leading to increased multiplication of the hair. Over the 2-3 months following the treatment, vast improvements can be seen. A repeat of PRP injections may be recommended about 6 weeks after your initial treatment and, based on your individual response, subsequent injections may be advised.

What it isn’t…

While the use of PRP has been prevalent in Orthopedic medicine for quite some time, its role in the world of aesthetics first gained massive media attention back in 2013 when Kim Kardashian posted a photo of her face covered in blood and it went viral. On a later episode of “Kourtney & Kim Take Miami,” camera crews followed Kardashian into the treatment room where she had a “Vampire facial,” which consisted of microneedling with topically-applied PRP as well as PRP injections. She writhed in pain and some articles posted afterwards even pegged the procedure as something straight out of a horror movie. But there are several things wrong with what was portrayed by the reality star’s experience.

  • Your face will not be covered in red blood. I repeat: you will not have any red blood on your face. As I mentioned before, once your blood is spun in the centrifuge, the plasma is separated from red and white blood cells. The end result: a light, yellow-ish liquid that is rubbed onto or injected into the skin. Even after microneedling, patients will only experience minor redness and maybe some pinpoint bleeding from the actual needles. .
  • The discomfort of the treatment is very minimal. Despite the name “microneedling” patients should not shy away due to the fear of pain. We apply a topical numbing agent prior to any of the PRP treatments which helps substantially with any discomfort.

The Bright Side: LED Light Therapy Boasts Glowing Results

Let us see light! LED Light therapy treatments, developed from NASA to treat Navy Seals with wound healing and muscle regeneration, has finally found its way into the aesthetic arena to beautify faces!

LED-Light-Therapy-Facial

So, what is LED Light Therapy?

LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode and our device is unique in also emitting infrared light when activated. The light given off comes in different wavelengths of colors which provide response to collagen, elastin and killing P. acnes bacteria.  Our skin and tissues have the ability to absorb light and convert it into energy, similar to the way plants absorb energy from the UV rays emitted by the sun. Unlike plants, however, we are unable to safely absorb sunlight without causing damage to our skin.  By emitting UV-free beneficial light rays, our device helps to energize cells while simultaneously stimulates the body’s natural ability to regenerate cells and build new proteins.

A Colorful Experience: What can I treat?

BRUISING, WRINKLES, SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

As I mentioned before, it’s pretty simple: different color lights are used to treat different things and the synergy of more than one light (in our practice, red and blue) can target multiple concerns at once. The Red LED light is the most “universal” because it accelerates healing and stimulates collagen, elastin and other proteins. Because of the increased circulation, oxygen and nutrients are delivered directly to the tissues in need of repair.   Our device gained FDA-approval for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles on the face as well as to aid in pain relief and wound healing. This is another reason why the device is being used by doctors to diminish bruising and swelling and accelerate the healing process post-treatment (imagine getting filler and being able to avoid bruising!)

ACNE

The blue light is one of our secret weapons in the fight against acne because it has the ability to destroy breakout-causing bacteria! The Blue Light is FDA-cleared to treat mild to moderate acne in both teenagers and adults. The waves of this light penetrate down to the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin, killing bacteria from the inside out.  The result: less frequent and milder breakouts. We utilize red and blue lights together in order to target active breakouts and the redness associated with them. You’ll leave with a dramatically visible improvement in the appearance of your skin!

So what should I expect to experience?

Your face will be situated just a few inches under a panel of warm, bright lights for 20 minutes. Those with light eyes may opt for protective eyewear. We’ve received zero complaints of the light temperature being too hot and most people only feel slightly flushed after the treatment is complete.  The standalone LED treatment is quick, too! You’ll be in and out in 20 minutes and on your way to glowy skin that will be the envy of all of your friends!

Who should not have an LED treatment?

Women who are or could be pregnant, anyone who suffers from Melasma or those currently on a light-sensitizing antibiotic should consult with their physician prior to this treatment.

COOLSCULPTING COOLMINI: No Need for Needles…Put a Freeze on your Double Chin.

CoolSculpting-Submental-Web-Banner

Over the last few years, we have seen a huge shift in the world of fat loss procedures.  Cryolipolysis, or freezing of the fat cells, has proven itself to be one of the greatest advancements in the arena of fat reduction. CoolSculpting has provided our patients with the ability to choose a safer alternative to liposuction while still seeing astonishing results in getting rid of their stubborn problem areas. We all know that needles aren’t for everyone; therefore, someone who is not keen on the idea of injections may feel as though they’ll never get rid of their double chin. Luckily for our trypanophobic friends, the newest CoolSculpting applicator may be the ideal treatment! The CoolSculpting CoolMini applicator was designed and FDA-approved specifically to target submental fat. Its unique curvature and size make it highly effective in treating and contouring the neck area. The FDA clearance is based on data from a U.S. pivotal clinical trial involving 60 male and female patients, ranging in age from 22 to 65 years. In the trial, patients received 1-2 treatments in the area under the chin, each six weeks apart resulting in an average of 20% fat reduction, which is in line with results achieved with other CoolSculpting applicators. Additionally, no significant adverse events were observed and patients experienced little to no discomfort or downtime.  Over 80% of patients in clinical trials were highly satisfied with their results and would recommend the treatment to a friend. So if you’re looking for a needle-free way to lose the double chin, the CoolMini could be the solution for you! An added perk? CoolMini may also be able to treat smaller pockets of fat on the body! Schedule your complimentary consultation to see if you are a candidate.

The Double Chin Solution: Kybella

We’ve all been hearing “Kybella” – the latest buzz word floating around the aesthetic medicine world. But is it for everyone?

Here’s the skinny on it:

Kybella is an FDA approved injectable medication that treats excess, unwanted fat under your chin also, known as “submental fullness”. For those with a mild to moderate amount of fat, it is a valid option to avoid surgery.

On average, candidates will need 2-3 treatments, 6 weeks apart and about 2-3 vials per treatment, depending on the area to be treated. The change happens gradually, with some skin tightening occurring, and results in the permanent destruction of fat.  Side effects are temporary, with swelling and numbness being the most common.

La Chele Medical Aesthetics is one of the first practices on the East Coast to carry Kybella and we are excited to finally have something to address this common unwanted issue. We are confident that it will be an excellent choice for many. Please join us on October 15th to learn more about Kybella!

Be Sun Savvy!

The summer may be inching closer to an end, but just because the days are already getting shorter doesn’t mean that you should start being less vigilant about your sun protection.  While the sun’s rays are at their hottest between 10 am and 2 pm, late afternoon and early evening sun is still capable of some serious scorching.

That said, it’s easy to forget to reapply sunblock when you’re chasing wet, sandy kids on the beach, grilling outside or running last-minute errands.  I know how hectic your schedules are—you just don’t have time to think about slathering on sunscreen every few hours.  That’s why I’m excited to share with you two innovations in UV protection that require minimal effort but yield maximum results.

JUNE BRACELET

The JUNE bracelet is a kind of Fitbit for the sun savvy.  The bracelet’s sensors precisely measure your sun exposure, while its partnering app computes the data to give you the UV index in real time.  The device considers all variables such as your skin type and UV exposure to give you your daily sun dose.  Your goal, of course, is to keep your daily sun dose as low as possible throughout the day.  This is where June guides you again by sending personalized notifications that not only tell you when to apply your SPF but also which level you need, taking the guesswork out of sun safety.  I don’t know about you, but I’m all for anything that makes my life a little bit easier.

WHATS ON THE INSIDE COUNTS TOO!

HELIOPLEX ULTRA SUPPLEMENTS BOOST YOUR UV PROTECTION

When most of us hear sun protection we think of sunblock, hats and a big pair of sunnies.  While these methods remain the gold standard, you can also boost your UV protection internally with an oral supplement called Heliocare Ultra.  Since getting complete coverage with a topical sunscreen is difficult, it makes sense to bolster our protection from damaging UVA/UVB rays from the inside as well, thereby protecting the entire skin surface.  Each capsule of Heliocare Ultra contains the extract of Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern rich in antioxidants, which, when taken regularly, builds up your body’s natural defenses against photoaging and sunburn.  I recommend taking Heliocare every day, even in the winter, when many of us mistakenly think we’re not susceptible to sun’s damaging rays.  Trust me, we are vulnerable every day of the year.  Add this supplement to your daily regime, and give yourself that extra boost of protection all year.

*Please note that although Heliocare tablets assist in preventing sun damage, they do not replace sunscreen.   For ultimate sun protection be sure to wear a water resistant, broad-spectrum sunblock of SPF 30 or higher every day.

IF THE PRICE OF BOTOX SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE… IT PROBABLY IS

A counterfeit version of “Botox” has been found in the United States and has reached physicians’ offices and medical clinics nationwide, per a warning from the US Food and Drug Administration.

“The product was sold by an unlicensed supplier who is not authorized to ship or distribute drug products in the United States. The counterfeit products are considered unsafe and should not be used. FDA cannot confiStock_000015347753_Small (2)irm that the manufacture, quality, storage, and handling of these suspect products follow U.S. standards,” the agency said in a news release.

La Chelé medical patients can be assured that we ALWAYS purchase our injectable neuromodulators and fillers – such as Botox (Allergan), Dysport (Galderma), and Xeomin (Merz) – directly from the supplier. La Chele Medical Aesthetics holds rankings as one of the largest injectable practices in the United States.  Dr. Espinoza trains physicians how to inject for both Galderma and Allergan across the East Coast.

It is very important to always make sure you are receiving the approved U.S. version of these products. If you suspect you might be receiving a counterfeit version, we encourage you to call Allergan, Galderma, or Merz directly to ensure your provider has an account with the company.

The FDA is asking the public to report suspect Botox products by calling the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations at 800-551-3989, online at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/email/oc/oci/contact.cfm, or by email at DrugSupplyChainIntegrity@fda.hhs.gov”.
